The Director of the National Aids Secretariat (NAS) Dr. Brima Kargbo yesterday disclosed to members of the media that his organization has received the sum of $26, 482,276(twenty six million, four hundred and eighty two thousand two hundred and seventy six dollars) from the Global Fund for the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The fight against Aids the Doctor said is not a one man’s business as it encompasses the dissemination of information to the wider public.
He stressed that the role of NAS is to coordinate all HIV/Aids activity in the country as they had a four year project sponsored by the World Bank which was supposed to end in December last year, although the project was extended to 2007 by the World Bank.
The object of the Global Fund he went on is to scale up the existing comprehensive national response in HIV/AIDS and this includes adequate prevention, treatment, care and support for those affected.
The Global Fund he said, is to expand its services to vulnerable groups who are otherwise at risk of HIV infection or have already been infected or affected.
The NAS Director explained that the Global Fund which was created in 2002 was a response to the global needs for additional resources to tackle the world’s three most devastating disease which are HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
His institution Dr Kargbo noted is the Principal recipient adding that they would ensure the full implementation of the programme and also ensure that effective arrangements are in place for the proper disbursement of funds to all sub recipients.
Dr Kargbo stated that they will also ensure the monitoring and evaluation, including periodic reporting on the programme results and financial accountability to the CCM and Global Fund.
So far he disclosed forty-six institutions have been selected as sub recipients to implement the activities for the first phase of this project.
The Administrative Secretary of the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) Global Fund Mariatu Dumbuya informed the media that whenever her organization has a project they will put the advert on the media.
NAS she stated performed exceedingly well in their round six proposals.
