The chief commissioner of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Dr Christiana Thorpe, has disclosed that a total of $24m is needed for this year’s local council elections slated for July 5th.
Answering to a question from the secretary general of the ruling All People’s Congress (APC), Victor Foh about funds needed for the elections, the chief commissioner disclosed that out of this $24 million fund for the election they had received a pledge of $9 million from their donors and $8-9 million from the government.
“We are pretty sure of the $19m and a short fall of $5 million which we hope to get and we are going to discuss this with our various stakeholders on how to get this balance. We will continue to raise funds because we are always ready to hold, free, fair and credible elections. And so even without the balance we will still go ahead with the elections,” she further disclosed.
