Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – The Sierra Leone Boxing Association has announced the postponement of the 2023 “Box Kush Komot Salone” National Championship and International fight, initially scheduled for December 25, 2023. The rescheduled date for the event is now April 26, 2024, coinciding with the eve of Sierra Leone’s Independence Day.
Alhaji Komba, the scribe of the Sierra Leone Boxing Association, explained that the decision to reschedule the championship was made after extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders. He cited various factors, including the aftermath of the attempted coup on November 26th, which had significant economic and social repercussions in Sierra Leone. The associated security threats, particularly for the British boxers traveling from the UK, were also considered in the decision-making process.
Additionally, the association faced challenges securing sponsorship for the event, with the National Sports Authority contributing to the overall disappointment.
While expressing regret for any inconvenience caused by the decision, Alhaji Komba highlighted the complex circumstances that led to the rescheduling. In the meantime, the Sierra Leone Boxing Association participated in the National Olympic Committee/CGA Sierra Leone 1st Edition National Championship in Bo on December 26, 2023.
The new date for the “Box Kush Komot Salone” Championship aims to ensure a safer and more conducive environment for the event, taking into account the various challenges faced in the initial planning stages. BT/27/12/2023
