Twenty students at the Progressive Women’s Association (PROWA) Technical and Vocational Institute have received certificates and start up kits after going through various skills training for years at 16 Kaikondor Road in Koidu city.
In his address the chairperson of the ceremony who is also the chairperson of the Board of Directors of PROWA Mrs. Sia Tongu thanked PROWA for complimenting the effort of the government by meaningfully engaging the young women in the country. She thanked all those who are helping the Institution in one way or the other by enduring that more people go through the institution which she said is a national development.
Giving a brief historical background of the Institute the Principal of Freetown branch Fengai Ngombu Gboli explained that PROWA girls Junior Secondary School and Technical Vocational Institute started as a Technical Vocational Institute in 1991 by the founder and Director General Mrs. Sia Doris Kamanda and her husband the indefatigable and industrious chairman Board of Director Chief A.M. Kamanda. The head office is at 16 Main road Koidu city Kono district and branch at M.O.W Compound Tower Hill, Freetown.
Mr. Gboli further revealed that the aims and objective of the establishment of the institute is to provide young girls with a broad based curriculum geared towards preparing them for senior secondary, middle management studies through the Tec/Voc. Institute and finally University or Tertiary training college. Also to instill in the pupils good moral standards self discipline, self esteem to become a capable mother in the long run.
In her contribution the brain behind the Institutions Mrs. Sia Doris Kamanda thanked all for gracing the occasion. She expressed happiness because her dream has become true.
She thanked IRC for supporting the training and providing start up kits for the graduands that have gone through the various skills in the Institution. Mrs. Kamanda revealed that since the establishment of the Institution about 3,600 have gone through the Institution and they are self reliant in the communities they found themselves.
She revealed that she has certain constraints in the institution among which is the status of her staff, explaining that there are 19 staff at the headquarter in Kono but only five of them are approved and 12 staffs at the Freetown branch with only four approved.
Madam Kamanda appealed to the ministry of education youths and sports to look into the plight of her staff.
She also appealed to the government and NGOs to come to the aid of the Institution in developing the middle level man power of the nation.
She said her vision is to establish vocational centres in all the districts in the country there by meaningfully engaging the minds of our young girls saying that an idle brain is a playing ground for evil spirits.
Delivering his statement the principal of the Kono branch Emmanuel A. Sandy highlighted the courses offered at PROWA Technical / Vocational Institution which includes gara tie dye and batik, tailoring, catering, cosmetology/hair dressing, adult education/ literacy, secretarial and commercial studies.
In her vote of thanks one of the graduands Moinia Banda Kpara thanked PROWA and all those who supported them during their course of their studies, saying that they will always remember them because they help in making them self reliant. She promised the NGOs and her audience that the kits they have received will be used for its intended purpose.
She appealed to her colleagues who are still on the streets to join the PROWA training Institution to learn something that will continue to take care of them. The program ended with the graduands displaying their talents.
