12 suspects in various alleged offences have escaped from the Panlap Police Division cells. The Panlap Police Division is under the supervision of the North/East Region AIG Frank Alpha. Police North / East Region Spokesman Inspector Abdulrahman Sankoh said Police only rearrested one out of the 12 escapees and the 11 are still on the run. He said the CDIID is investigating the incident. Inspector Sankoh described the escape of the detainees as unfortunate. He said the 12 escapees are alleged hardcore criminals awaiting prosecution at the Makeni Magistrate court on various offences under the Panlap Police Division The Police Division is asking the community to supply them with information leading to the rearrests of the escapees. A team of Police officers have been commissioned to rearrests the detainees. Many people are worried about the issue when there is no breakage in the cells and how the detainees left the cells. Many people are also disappointed in the police force and loss in confidence. Civil Society is worried about this development. A leading Civil Society Activist Ibrahaim Daramy said detainees escaping in Police net always cast suspicion. Whosoever is in charge of the cells in the Division should be held accountable especially when the number of escapees is huge. “Not one or 2 but 12 escapees on the run is a serious security threat in the communities. You know how Police marshal suspect in Police Cells. This is not too strange as many people think . We have always got issues with the Police on breaking security confidence” Mr. Daramy said.

This is the first time such a huge number of detainees ran away from Police Cells in the region. The escape of the 12 detainees happened on the Tuesday 12th November 2019. Residents of Makeni have expressed concerns over the disappearance of the detainees. Many people are presently living in fear when the information on escapees broke in the City. Ruth Sesay expressed security concerns because of the escape of the 12 detainees. She said they don’t know when the escapees will strike again since they are no longer in Police net. The Panlap Police Division is situated about 3 miles from the business center of Makeni City.Abdulai Sankoh said this is connivance with the Police . “Police in the Division have to be held responsible. If the Police cannot protect their Cells where they kept the 12 detainees then it is evidence that they cannot protect lives and properties in our communities” Sankoh said. The question that remained unanswered is when will the 11 escapees be rearrested and prosecuted in a Magistrate Court and when the Police in charge of the Cells in the Division be held accountable.
