The presidential candidate of the Sierra Leone people’s party has said in Freetown that he will not accept the results as read out by the Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC)
In his statement Bio said “we had raised concerns about the electoral irregularities including fake and unstamped reconciliation and result forms, pre-marked ballot papers, ballot stuffing and over voting in Kono, the Western Area and the Northern province.”
He added “these and many other instances of malpractices undermined the credibility of the results.”
Bio said “The commission refused to address our concerns” and for him what was “more disturbing is that the commission pre-maturedly stopped recounting of ballot papers from polling station whose results were quarantined.”
He stated that his party had in earlier press releases stated its position “that we cannot accept results of any rigged election.”
Bio said “we believe that the results was fraudulent and the results do not reflect the will of the people of Sierra Leone.”
He cautioned his party members and supporters “to remain calm and to be law abiding” advising them “to report all incidents of the on going provocation and violence against our supporters to the nearest police station.”
At the tail end of her statement after announcing the results the NEC Chief said “Any citizen of Sierra Leone may challenge the validity of the election of the president by petition to the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone, within seven days after the declaration of the presidential results.”
It is not clear whether this is the action that the SLPP are contemplating. Supporters however were very adamant chanting “we nor gree, we nor gree, we nor gree” which translated literally means ‘ we do not agree’.
