President Ernest Bai Koroma has in a press briefing at State House yesterday cautioned Sierra Leoneans that “we are not still out of the woods yet”. He made this statement upon his arrival from the 64th UN General Assembly held in New York last week.
He catalogued achievements made by his government broadly in electricity generation and the social sector. However there still remain some herculean tasks to perform to put the country on the right footing. He said that the country should be capacitated to be able to solve its own immediate problems. He added that the country has a reputation for dependency, and that we should not be dependent throughout our lives. The country, he said, devoid of its 11 years civil war has been ranked by the World Bank as one that is politically stable and one of the friendliest environments to do business.
He said that in his agenda for change, priority is laid on the energy sector, infrastructure and food security, adding that funds are laid for rural electrification projects. He mentioned the appalling nature of the health care system in the country considering the prevailing sicknesses and deaths.
As part of his agenda for change, he said he will hold a two- phase donor conference in London on November 18 and 19. The first phase will be based on trade and investment, which will show case areas to invest. The other phase he said will encompass the donor conference in which the agenda for change will be discussed.
During the General Assembly he said, issues were raised ranging from the prevailing financial crises and climate change. These, he said, are compounded with other global challenges like terrorism and drug trafficking, adding that there is the need for us as nations to come together to enhance a formidable society. He maintained that the meeting was vital in all respect, and it holistically built an overall spirit of working together.
