The Chief of Defence Staff of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces, Major General Alfred Claude Nelson Williams and the Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police, Brima Acha Kamara have paid a joint visit to the 34 Military hospital to sympathize with Private Hassan Bendu the soldier who was allegedly beaten to the point of death by bike riders and later man-handled by police officers at Waterloo.
It could be recalled that about a fortnight ago the people of the Waterloo community witnessed a reminiscence of the brutal civil war when dozens of soldiers from the Benguema training barracks stormed the Waterloo Police station and allegedly caused damage to the building after they received information that their colleague Hassan Bendu had been beaten up Okada riders and later assaulted at the Police Station.
Speaking to Awoko about the purpose of the joint visit Major General Alfred Claude Nelson Williams said they went to the 34 hospital to sympathize with Private Hassan Bendu who is currently lying in severe pain as a result of the incident at Waterloo.
He further explained that since the incident occurred they have been in constant touch with the police to see what measures could be put in place to avert further reoccurrence of the incident.
The military boss considered the joint visit as an important step in sending a message to the nation that the military and the police have nothing absolutely that will set them against each other. “There is no animosity and rancor between the police and the military” he stated.
“The synergy between the military and the police cannot be overemphasized as we (military) are always there to compliment the efforts of the police” the CDS reaffirmed.
I.G Acha Kamara greeted and spoke to the sick soldier with compassion and empathy saying “I am here to sympathize with you on behalf of the Sierra Leone Police. May god provide the right medication for you, sorry” he ended.
He also added his voice to the CDS by assuring Sierra Leoneans that the police and the military are united in ensuring that the people of this country cohabit in a peaceful environment.
Dr. P.F Nabieu disclosed to Awoko that Private Hassan Bendu has been diagnosed with damaged nerves and also serious damage to the lower and upper limbs.
He also disclosed that the victim has swollen feet and hands
