The chairman of Port Loko District Council, Ahmid Munirr Fofanah has disclosed to Awoko that the lack of maintenance of
government houses in the Port Loko District has seen most of these structures liquidated and this has created a big problem
for the council to provide accommodation for its staff.
He said most of these houses were inherited by the central government from the colonial masters but previous governments have
failed to maintenance those buildings to make them habitable for people.
“You cannot attract competent people to your district to work when there is no housing facility” the chairman said. He
further lamented that most devolved staff normally refuse to go to provincial areas because of poor housing facilities.
Amidst other problems the Council chairman also complained of the problem of mobility which he termed as a serious challenge
facing his council.
He said the Port Loko District Council has not got any means of transportation. “Even as Chairman I don’t have a vehicle” he
lamented.
Speaking about developmental activities in the district Ahmid Munirr Fofanah revealed to Awoko that the long anticipated
construction work on the Bankasoka River for mini hydro electricity is expected to commence in October this year.
Councilor Ahmid Munirr Fofanah explained that a lot of thorough studies and technical research have been made on the
Bankasoka River and it is now clear that the river has the potential to provide mini hydro electricity to the Port Loko
District.
The chairman went further to disclose that the project will be funded by the European Union while construction is expected to
be undertaken by the Chinese.
