The head coach of Ports Authority Football Team, Christian Cole has blamed striker, Donald Wellington as responsible for the goalless draw in last Saturday’s match with Guinean counterpart, Horoya Atletico at the National Stadium in Freetown. It was the first leg of the CAF Champions league.
He said that after missing a penalty Port Authority had been awarded, he said Wellington had several goal opportunities which “he failed to make good use of” by not scoring any goals. He described Wellington style of play during the match as “selfish and reckless” and that he showed “no commitment to the game.”
He cleared the Technical Team of any blame, noting that they had done what they were supposed to do. “The players failed to implement all that they were thought during trainings,” he said.
The Assistant Coach of the team, Hassan Milan Sesay in his contribution said that the team played well, they dominated the match, but they failed to score goals. He however indicated that there hope in the horizon for the team to overcome their defeat by beating their Guinean counterparts in the return leg in Conakry.
He did not blame Donald Wellington for having missed the penalty because according to him, world-class players have missed penalty kicks on several occasions. He indicated that the changes they made in the second half of the game did not actually help noting that the players who came in afterwards “did not do anything to improve the game, nor were they able to make ant impact on the game,” Mr. Sesay noted.
He however noted that they will go back to the drawing table to correct what ever may have possibly gone wrong.
On the same day FC Kallon lost by a goal to nil to their Cameroonian opponents, Union de Duala in the first leg of the CAF Confederation.
FC Kallon will host their defeaters in two weeks at the National Stadium in Freetown, while Ports Authority will go away to seek revenge against their Guinean counterpart Horoya Atletico in Conakry.
