The principal of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary school Abdul Karim Sesay has disclosed to Awoko Sports that Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary is the only school that has an athletics camp called camp Canada.
He went further that pupils in the school who have talent in athletics were invited to the camp to under go intensive training to become one of the best athletes in the country to represent Sierra Leone in international competition.
Principal Karim Sesay explained that they train their pupils with or without competitions as they do not wait for competitions. He mentioned that during the last Olympic Games in China, out of the two athletes that represented Sierra Leone one of them, Solomon Bayoh, came from Ahmadiyya and from camp Canada.
He also mentioned that for the past years the camp and School have been victorious in school athletics competitions pointing out that as competitions approached they go straight to camp to select the best athletes that will represent the school in inter-sec competition.
Karim Sesay also disclosed that after their schools athletics meeting the junior boys and girls that excelled in the sports meet, they are directly taken to the camp to start intensive training.
He said because other Schools fail to copy their examples, they import outsiders to represent them in Schools competitions; a move he described as bad for the development of schools sports.
“In Ahmadiyya School we never do that as we have more than enough athletes to represent us in any school competitions in and out of the country” he said.
Principal Sesay said that they have encouraged the athletes in such a way that their parents are always happy with the school and with the kind of encouragement they give to the pupils, the athletes always bring laurels to the school any time they partake in any sporting competition.
He further disclosed that any pupil that performs well during school sporting competitions that pupil automatically secures a scholarship from the school and the mission as their own way of appreciation to the pupils until their education ends in the school.
Continuing, he said over the past years the school’s discipline has improved and that discipline is their watch word during any sporting competition. He said he was shocked to have read in a local newspaper that his pupils were involved in disturbances after a school competition “Ahmadiyya pupils to involve in violence was very negative as Ahmadiyya Secondary school is one of the best disciplined schools presently in the country” he boasted.
