The SLPP flag bearer aspirant and former Minister of Education, Dr. Alpha Tejan Wurie, on Sunday 10th July said in Kenema that his visit to the eastern regional headquarter town of Kenema was to present a lecture with the theme: “Re-awakening the consciousness of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).”
The former SABABU Education Minister made his presentation at the SLPP Regional Head Office at Hangha Road in Kenema City.
He told SLPP stakeholders, delegates and members of the party that his visit was not on his personal campaign to become flag bearer of the party, but to lecture on the issues that will bring the SLPP family together and to increase the chances of winning in the forthcoming 2012 elections.
Reflecting on the good work of the SLPP, Dr. Alpha Wurie said “now is the time for Sierra Leoneans to access what the various ministries, government parastatals, institutions, agencies and companies did under the leadership of the then President, Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah.”
Talking about developing a nation, Dr.Wurie said the SLPP government that served this nation from 1996-2007 no doubt succeeded in restoring and consolidating peace, nurtured a fragile state and brought back integrity to statehood.
About good governance institutions, he said after putting the security sector on a very firm footing, the immediate focus became strengthening good governace.
It was in this light that several good governance institutions were created such as National Revenue Authority (NRA), National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT), Anti- Corruption Commission (ACC), National Public Procurement Authority (NPPA), National Commission for Privatization (NCP), Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), Human Rights Commission, etc.
He also said the SLPP brought back Local Councils which were phased out by the APC decades ago.
Dr. Wurie further stated that the party saw the need to empower rural communities and gave them a say in the running of their own affairs.
Projects were conceptualized, defended and resources secured especially for development of energy and infrastructure.
Further highlighting Dr. Alpha Tejan Wurie said as for road construction and rehabilitation that is now being trumpeted by the APC, the message must be hammered home that everything was done before the SLPP lost power in 2007.
He said his ‘SABABU’ Education project and other related national development are indelible things that the past regime did for the people of this nation.
On issues surrounding Attitudinal Change, Dr. Alpha Wurie said they are all initiatives of the SLPP which, according to him, is the talk of the curent government, the rulling All People’s Congress party (APC).
He called on the delegates to be mindful of electing the flag bearer of the party come the convention day.
