Alie Gibrilla Koroma who represented the National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone in the World Sports for All Congress in Quala Lumpur Malaysia has told Awoko Sports that the Congress was a success.
He said that the Congress was organized by the Olympic Council of Malaysia under the patronage of the international Olympic Committee (IOC) who also paid his airfare, feeding and accommodation and Sports-for-all-commission in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the General Association of International Sports Federation (GAISF).
The congress was attended by 505 delegates from 96 countries.
He went further that the delegates at the congress called on all governments to act urgently as to counter the global problems of decreasing physical activity and the increasing incidence of obesity.
The congress also called on governments and public authorities at all levels to focus on the importance of sports and physical activity as a key element of health policy.
When formulating policies, take into account the public health, social and economic benefits of increased participation in sports and physical activity.
He also mentioned that congress fully supported the implementation of the WHO global strategy on diet, physical activity and health, 2008 Action Plan and the recommendations on prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.
He also noted that Congress also strongly recommended that National Olympic Committees, International Federations and other Sport Organizations together with government agencies for health, education and sports development to expand or adapt (to suit local needs and conditions).
He also said that Congress proposed that the 2009 IOC Congress Commission considers the recommendations made at this 12th World Sport-For-All Congress, in particular the initiatives and research which addresses the IOC 2009 Congressional theme-‘Moving Towards An active Society’.
Alie Gibrilla Koroma also said that he did not only attend the congress as a participant but also as a speaker in the all important week long sessions after responding to a four-month post announcement for the submission of abstracts for inclusion in the official congress programme.
He went further that his abstract attracted the attention and recommendation of the board of supervisors and he was also given the opportunity, ever for a Sierra Leonean and debutant, to give a poster presentation on’ The Role of Sports –For-All in the World of Information Technology’.
He also said that in addition he has been charged with the responsibility of working towards the formation of a commission of sports-for-all-in Sierra Leone before the end of last year within the NOC Sierra Leone IOC chapter, and also updating the NOC and the IOC Sport-For-All-Commissions on activities of the sports for all commission of Sierra Leone twice annually.
