The Director of Sports, Bai Kabia, has disclosed to the Parliamentary oversight Committee on Education, Youth and Sports that the 1964 Act of Parliament which created the National Sports Council Act should be revisited if sports is to take a different turn in the country.
He mentioned that the Act initially catered for five disciplines, and these are Football, Cricket, Boxing, Athletics and Tennis; but as at now they have to deal with many associations, which is not easy as funding is not always available.
He noted that they are doing everything in their power to control the proliferation of associations and therefore called on Parliament to fast track the process of rebuilding and empowering for the National Sports Council.
When questioned about the poor performance of Leone Stars, the Director of Sports told the Committee that a strong home based team would be put in place to salvage the situation in the future.
He then made mention of the dishonesty involved in the selection of junior athletes, to represent the country in international competitions.
He said that the only solution is for Sierra Leone to go back to the drawing board and prepare well to face the challenges ahead.
