The Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth Handball Association has disclosed to Awoko Sports at the National Stadium in Freetown that Sports is money and not a privilege.
He said that for countries to achieve their goals and objective in sports it is money. “Without money it is not easy for any country to reach its peak in sports.”
He said that with sports you can go everywhere in the world and make new friends, that is why in sports you are exposed to different places in the world.
In the 70s and the 80s he said sports was played for leisure but now sports is money. “If you are a sportsman or woman you go to other countries to make money you play they give you money and you bring that money home and invest it into your country by supporting other people.”
He said sports is a big business and there are many ways you can use sports to make money and be very independent. For example he said Okocha is one of the richest in Nigeria but he does not have a degree, he only has football skills. He also mentioned that Handball is one of the fastest sports in the world which is very good to played.
Mallam Garba also said that they are going leave about 20 Handballs that would be used to play the game and it cost a lot of money.
He went further to advice the association and the government to start the sports from primary schools by organizing handball competitions. He has also advised them to write to the international committee for assistance for equipments to run these competitions.
He said that they want to partner with Sierra Leone Handball association to develop the game and they must try to have an in door court which other sporting disciplines would use in the future. He also appealed to government to come on board to construct the indoor court.
On the participants he said both the coaches and the referees are happy as they are prepared to learn and after the course they would invite three good pairs of referees to officiate in the Commonwealth Youth Championship competition in Yaounde.
He also mentioned that for the coaches he would come in two years time to come and see what the coaches have done if they have raised the youth teams in the country and they will know if they are making progress or not in their coaching course.
