The President of the Sierra Leone cricket Association (SLCA) Beresford Coker has disclosed to Awoko sports that his dream is for Sierra Leone to become a test playing cricket nation and they are working towards this in the coming years.
He also mentioned that the U-19 cricket team was able to excel in both their competitions in Mozambique and Zambia because the boys were prepared to do something bigger adding that they also wanted to prove to the world that Sierra Leone is a force to reckon with in terms of cricket.
Mr. Coker further stated that the executive of SLCA wants to do everything possible to spread the game of cricket in the four corners of Sierra Leone and they have started working on that. He said they are going to start the game with schools in September this year and they have made some local balls and other items to play the game.
They will also try to organize school cricket tournaments and the winners in these tournaments and the best players will receive scholarship as their prizes as a means to boost their education so that their parents will be willing to let their children play the game.
He also disclosed that this year they received 19 thousand dollars from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and they spent 12 thousand dollars for their trip to Mozambique and 15 thousand dollars for the trip to Zambia.
He said they are hoping that when they send their budget to ICC for the second phase of the competition they will increase the funds,
Beresford Coker also mentioned that the money they receive from the International Cricket Council (ICC) is not enough to promote and run the game in the country but this time government helped them with some funding.
‘Although the support we got from the business houses is not enough we hope that they will come onboard in full to assist in the coming competitions’.
