The UNDP programme specialist for poverty and Human Development Stephen Bainous Kargbo said that the just concluded Marathon competition organized by the ministry of Education Youth and Sports and other development partners in accordance with World Literacy Day celebrations and popularization of the MDG’S is an awareness raising event as a lot of people did not know about the MDG.
He said the starting point after the signing of the declaration by the government is for Sierra Leoneans to know about the MDGs. The event he said has been completed as a public event and we have taken the opportunity of informing the nation that the government of Sierra Leone is a signatory to the MDG which has 8 goals that focus on the development of the people of this country and the first goal deals with the eradication of poverty and hunger.
The second goal deals with Education for all and then there are other goals that deals with equality for man and woman – gender issue.
The other goals are dealing with Health issues and the idea is for people to know that we have this kind of arrangement or framework that the government assigns therefore as a Sierra Leonean you need to know that, so that you can hold government accountable for want they are doing.
He went further that they decided to choose the marathon as the athletes go around the city many people were asking questions and now they know what was going on.
He hoped that this Marathon is not a one off event and it will be done in accordance with the International Literacy Day
