A group of Sierra Leoneans in the United States of America known as the ‘Home Initiative’ has deemed it fit to come to the rescue of the Principal referral hospital Connaught Hospital by donating 11 cartons of plates, each containing 24 plates and 50 bed sheets and pillow cases to ease some of the constraints.
Before she officially handed over the gesture to the hospital through the caretaker manager Dr. Desmond Black, a member of the Connaught Hospital board Mrs. Alama Taylor said that Home Initiative is a Non- Profit making Organization registered in the USA seeking the development of Sierra Leone after the devastation of the rebel war which left most of the institutions in ruins.
The donation she said came as a realization of the many things they could afford towards the revitalization of the country, adding that the donation came as a response to the call of President Ernest Koroma requesting every Sierra Leonean at home and abroad to contribute towards the development of their mother land.
The organization which was formed in October, 2007 in the United State of America comprised of : Amoni Agbenoo, Gloria Betts, Monica Carter-West, Umaru Kebbay, Ahmed Koroma, Ibrahim Koroma Kara Speights Dunstan, Jennifer Sawyer and Elizabeth Toure.
Dr. Desmond Olu Black the caretaker manager at the Connaught Hospital expressed profound gratitude for such a meaningful gesture which he said was coming at the most appropriate time since they are about to reopen the Annex department of the Hospital that had been closed to the public since 2006.
He commended government for doing her utmost in up keeping the hospital, but he however pleaded with donors and other well meaning Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad to assist in the revitalization of the health sector with special reference to the Connaught Hospital which is the principal referral hospital in the country. He assured the benefactors that the gesture would be judiciously utilized to achieve its intended objective. With effective and efficient management he continued, the items would be handled with every care, adding that the donation came just after the completion of fasting for divine intervention into the running of the hospital and the ministry of health.
Rev. Gloria Betts- Cole mother of one of the benefactors in the USA, expressed satisfaction over the gesture noting that such consideration towards national development is a clear manifestation of patriotism. The Secretary General of the western area hospital board Mr. Solomon Gerber spoke about attitude change towards the development of the country. He praised the hospital management for up keeping the sanitary condition of the hospital.
